Next Google Chrome (version 28) will use Blink

I did not know this until today as I was updating the Google Chrome browsers to version 27 on the stage web servers.

The next version of Chrome (28) will use Blink, a fork of WebKit that was announced early in May.

This is a report from Google I/O

I am wondering how much this might affect cross platform applications.

Palomino Pencil Tests

Palomino Pencil Tests

I just received the shipment of the new California Republic Palomino Blackwing Pearl pencils. I had to try them out and compare to others I have. I have been pleased with the soft black writing of the Palomino premium pencils. I was a pen person, until I read the article in the Boston Globe about the new Blackwing, and also what the Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602 was about.

I have purchased a wide variety of wood-cased pencils since September 2011 and used them. I have been working on my drawing skills. Also, I have brought them to work to make note-taking more fun.

Useful free .NET dll decompiler

I just used this to look at a deployed project .NET DLL to verify a code change had been made. Very useful on a straight DLL not in a project. It can be unzipped into a directory and run from there.

Final results for blogging app

WordPress has emerged as a winner, but not without reservation. Since I make my living working on Windows and Visual Studio, I really wanted to go with a .NET solution on a Windows host. Also, I have read in more than one place that WordPress melts down when slashdotted or other viral content directs at your website. I am not really fond of PHP based sites, since I have needed to clean up after hacks on the Nuke sites.

It turns out that Windows based WordPress hosting is the worst of both worlds. GoDaddy does not say this in their support and hosting plans, but WordPress is unusable on a shared windows hosting plan, even a deluxe plan. They have WordPress hosting , which is really one of their Linux hosting plans marketed specifically at bloggers. The GoDaddy support person said it would be a “night and day difference.” He is correct. I actually can post and view posts. I might be able to make some money with this too.

It seems like MVC4 does not just go by itself. It needs NUGET, and the rewrite module to get all right with the world.

Getting Visual Studio 2010 Service pack 1 installed on a Windows 2003 build server was a sore trial. It turns out there is a hotfix necessary to allow the install to complete.

http://windowsitpro.com/windows/q-you-receive-error-1718-file-filename-was-rejected-digital-signature-policy-when-you-attemp

When you attempt to install a large .msi package or .msp package on Windows Server 2003, you receive:

Error 1718. File <FileName> was rejected by digital signature policy.

This behavior occurs if the server has insufficient contiguous memory to verify that the package is correctly signed.

DasBlog and WordPress showdown

I have been in the process of evaluating a blogging tool. WordPress has a very handy free app for Windows Phone and iPhone for blogging. The DasBlog software does not seem to have an equivalent native app.

Shared hosting learning experience

This current shared hosting vendor has a great deal for this domain and hosting, but the performance is weak for a Windows server IIS shared host running PHP and mySQL. Part of the secret I am told is to turn off plugins. Also to get the W3 cache plug in. I have enabled these now and will watch how it goes.

It is nice that this blog can be posted with iPhone and Windows phone apps.

Home repairs in the 21st century

A bathroom vanity sink has a leaking faucet and needs a new cartridge. I looked at two large time repair retailers and did not find the one I needed. Fortunately, one had a book with color pictures. So I ordered the parts on line through my Windows phone.
